Pillar II: Participant Engagement

Participant Engagement is necessary in a person-centered approach to care and requires an understanding of the “lived experience” of having a disability. The purpose is to engage participants in life planning, and to optimally assume responsibility for their health and health care. The first step in the care planning process is to gather meaningful participant input which includes reviewing participant profiles, actively listening to their stories, and understanding disability culture and rights and the impact of isolation. This will result in a more active participant who is engaged in the process, decision making and ownership of responsibility.
