Motivational interviewing (MI) is a person-centered approach that helps build trusting relationships with clinicians and facilitates greater engagement, activation, and partnership that supports individuals in defining and achieving their health care goals.1 Health plans and providers are increasingly exploring MI to better understand and integrate individuals’ unique circumstances and preferences into treatment plan goals.

Resources for Integrated Care (RIC) developed this spotlight to highlight MIs’ potential for engaging enrollees dually eligible for Medicare and Medicaid – who are more likely to be living with multiple chronic physical and mental health conditions relative to their Medicare-only peers.2 The spotlight offers insights into how two organizations – MMM of Puerto Rico (MMM) and Camden Coalition – incorporate MI into their work. It explores how both organizations refined their MI approach to fit their populations’ needs and shares lessons learned along the implementation journey.
